Almost everyone desires to be in a loving, mutual relationship. For some, it is their main goal in life – without another person to share their thoughts and dreams with, they feel incomplete and alone. Many will latch onto the first person of the opposite sex who pays attention to them and gives them even small amounts of love and affection. Whether they are compatible or not is often not even considered, resulting in a breakup or divorce, weeks, months, or even years into the future.

Before you can even have an effective relationship, you must know yourself and what makes you the type of person you are. Only then will you be able to define what kind of relationship will complement you and your lifestyle. Assess your strengths and weaknesses and decide what type of person would bring balance to your life. If you are shy and quiet, a boisterous, funny individual may be just what you need to bring you out of your shell and into the limelight. A workaholic may be drawn to an individual who is lighthearted and not quite so serious to show him or her that there is more to life than a job or career.

Learning what type of relationship you want and following your gut feelings as to who that perfect person may be is a step in the right direction. List out the characteristics you seek in a long-term mate and stick to your guns. Don’t settle because you are lonely, afraid or just tired of being a fifth wheel at parties and dinners. If you sense that the person you are with is not right for you, don’t ignore these early warning signs just because everyone else seems to have a special someone in their life.

Many individuals, both men and women, will find themselves becoming needy and totally preoccupied with the process of a new and ongoing relationship. They will examine every word spoken and action taken to try to decipher the other person’s feelings for them. This is not love. This is an addiction to the idea of being in love. If you are not comfortable with the person you are involved with or don’t trust them around other individuals of the opposite sex, it is time to call it quits before you get in too deep and get seriously hurt.

In summary, fix your relationship madness and take the time to search within yourself. Find that power within you to be true to yourself. You may not believe it now but often it is better to be by yourself than with an individual you don’t really love, trust or respect. Love, trust and respect yourself first and good things – and great relationships – will come to you.
