Relationship Issues And Mental Health
“Love must be genuine. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good”
It is difficult to see our own mind as evil. After all, it has been the instrument by which we have lived all our life. It has warned us, or guided us into some good things. But, anyone who has sat or kneeled down to meditate, or to worship, or to hear something from God, has discovered where the real warfare is. We can barely be into our meditation or prayer before our MINDS interrupt with something- ANYTHING; seemingly, the more logical, important, or immediately needful, the better. And, as soon as we turn our attention AWAY from God and give that thing our attention, we’ve placed IT (that person or thing), back on the throne of our lives.
The Enemy Is The Way We Think
Our carnal mind is the last and most aggressive enemy to eradicate WITHIN us. And yes I did say “ENEMY”. Whoever or whatever is an ENEMY of God’s ought to also be our ENEMY as well. “Carnal” is an extremely difficult concept to grasp so I did a little searching around to find like terminology and here’s what I found. “Carnality” represents…..animalism, greed, sensualist, weakness, depravity, rot, corruption, wickedness, perversion, evildoing, and ill, just to name a few. Now, I hope you can somewhat understand why the “carnal” mind is God’s enemy and ours.
John, in the book of Revelation repeated over and over again the words, “To him who overcomes, I will give…..” Overcome what? Answer, his or her own recurring, self-promoting, self-centered, evil, “carnal” nature. Jesus came to deliver all those who, “through fear of death were subject to bondage.”
Let Go and Trust God
It is not PHYSICAL DEATH that God is addressing here. THE DEATH WE TRULY FEAR IS THE DEATH TO SELF!!! And it is not so much the death of bad habits we have come to view as destructive. It is the threat of death to our supposed Self-Control, which is nothing more than our “carnal” mind’s predominance and preeminence over ALL that we THINK and DO. It is a FEAR of what might happen if we truly let go of ourselves, and trust God. It is THIS “fear” of truly letting go of our ourselves that keeps us chained to our “carnal” (meat headed) way of thinking.
IT IS VERY SIGNIFICANT THAT JESUS CHRIST WAS CRUCIFIED ON GOLGOTHA (the place of the skull/our patterns of thinking), THE RESISTANCE OF THE MIND, THE FIRST AND LAST PLACE OF BONDAGE IN US.
Everyone Else Needs To Change
Our natural mindset was created to BLOCK OUT. Listen, in the present moment countless stimuli literally bombard us- seating, lighting, sounds in and outside of our homes, kid/spouses (especially spouses), people calling, worries nagging us, hunger and thirst, aches and pains, etc., etc. If our minds did not block out most stimuli and decide which to heed and act upon, we would be in constant chaos attempting to respond to everything at once. Unless, and when we decide to take that mindset to the Cross of Christ, it will soon begin to block out the voice of God and we will become HARD, STUBBORN, AND REBELLIOUS, thinking that it’s everyone else who needs to change. Do you know people like that? Are you that way?
The sad tragedy is that so many people are blindsided by this. Therefore, they have never understood the continuing battle to subdue their own minds and feelings. They are constantly falling into negative and unsound ways of thinking and blaming it on the evil or the devil when neither is the problem. Our lack of understanding and mental discipline is what is discouraging us and making us miserable. In our present culture, our mental discipline consists of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, reality shows promoting pain and drama, and silly, mindless network comedies.
Under pressure we tend to “regress” to the familiar ways of the past. Our old practiced ways of thinking and feeling, the ways we use to think as children. They may not have worked, they kept us defeated and bound up, but at least they were familiar to us. And by falling back onto them, we reinstall that “self-centered”, childish self and put him/her in control- even if that means being out of control in our thoughts and emotions.
WE ARE CREATURES OF HABIT AND MANY OF OUR HABITS ARE KILLING US!
