Idol worship is generally an unfamiliar term to Western culture. We speak of “third world” countries involved in idol worship, but not here in America……Heaven forbid!!! We were designed by God to worship. The definition of worship is “extravagant respect or admiration for, or devotion to, an object or person of high esteem.” In our hearts, we will worship, or extravagantly admire and devote ourselves to the things or person(s) we love or desire. When we worship Idols , we “embrace” them, “love” them, devote ourselves to them and make it our business to please them, whether they be our love of approval, love of money, love of sex, love of men, or love of women.
IDOLS OF THE HEART
Take them away and watch your reaction. What happens to you and your attitude when you don’t have sex? What happens to you when you don’t have the drugs, the drink, or the cigarette you crave? What happens to you when you don’t have that man or that woman? What happens to you when you don’t have that “fat” bank account? What happens to you when you are not recognized for your accomplishments? What happens to you when you feel ignored or humiliated? What happens to you when things don’t go your way?
MOST OF THE TIME WE DON’T EVEN KNOW THAT OUR HEART IS ATTACHED TO AN IDOL UNTIL IT IS THREATENED – THEN WE’LL FIGHT AND RATIONALIZE LIKE HELL TO KEEP IT!!!
Many of us offer blame and excuses for our ungodly and excessive desires. We use the excuse of family background and upbringing, or the way “I used to be” for the reason I’m the way I am today. Listen, Adam and Eve had no background and they still wound up in bondage to their desires. Why? Spiritually speaking we have a conflict going on within us and this conflict is the result of not getting what we want. When our wants and desires take first place in our lives it creates an inner turmoil which interferes with and damages all our external relationships. God is a jealous God and in His love for us, and for our own sanity and protection, He will always seek to detach our affections from the idols that take prominence over Him.
Idols Of The Heart- WHAT YOU LOVE RULES YOUR HEART AND ULTIMATELY RULES YOU. What are your idols of the heart? Come to the realization that what you love the most is ruling you. Or to put it another way, what you most fear losing is actually controlling you. Until we turn from loving our “idols of the heart” more than we love the God of the universe, we will always have this inner turmoil and conflict making it impossible for us to experience lasting joy and peace.
