How Important Is Educational Compatibility?

Relationships and Emotional Compatibility

When thinking about educational compatibility, it’s important to consider how much your own level of education influences your current relationships. Think about conversations you’ve enjoyed with family members or friends. Do you talk often or in-depth about scientific or philosophical topics? Do you enjoy discussing topics you don’t know much about, or do you prefer to delve deeply into the specific topics you are already passionate about? Do you prefer conversations to be very balanced, or do you like being part of conversations where one person is explaining a topic to the other? In the later case, do you like talking at length about your field of interest, or do you prefer to hear about the other person’s passions?

Your answers to these questions will illuminate you regarding the importance you should place on educational compatibility in your relationships.

Keep an Open Mind

Whatever level of importance you place on your own educational experience, it is important to keep in mind that someone’s educational pursuits are not an all-encompassing description of their interests, fields of knowledge, or even level of intellect. Someone who spent their time in school studying mathematics and computer engineering can still be well read and perfectly willing to discuss literature or the arts, and vice-versa, additionally, just because someone left education early to pursue a career does not necessarily mean they aren’t a bright, intelligent person with a love of learning (although, alternatively, someone could be well-educated and still a dull conversationalist!). It’s important to keep an open mind, and to consider a person’s level of education as a guidepost to their interests and personality, not as a tell-all indicator of compatibility.

Things That Affect Relationships

There isn’t really any universal rule to tell how someone’s educational history will effect your relationship. For the most part, people enjoy having conversations about their interests outside of academics or careers – things like music, books, movies, sports, food, etc. – which tend to be accessible regardless of their partner’s educational background. If, however, you really like to converse deeply and often about very specific topics, whether that’s science or literature or philosophy or anything, it may be important for you to find someone that not only shares those interests, but has studied them at some higher level as well. Keep an open mind, and remember that an important part of every relationship is learning not just about your partner, but about the things that fascinate and inspire them. Someone with vastly different interests than yours could be an opportunity to learn something new and wonderful – and could be eager to learn from you as well!
