Dating Your Parents

If you feel as if you are Dating Your Parents, you should address the situation quickly before it gets out of hand. A relationship is meant for spending time with each other and keeping each other in good company, not for controlling each other and setting rules like you are each others guardians. If your boyfriend or girlfriend seems more like a parent than a partner, it’s time to sit them down and talk to them about it.

It’s only natural for us to want to tell our partner who to hang out with and where they can go. This is natural because when you love someone, you don’t want to think about losing them to someone or something else. With that being said, we can also get a little too carried away with this and end up being more of a PARENT than a PARTNER. Your partner should not set rules for you, baby you as if you are their child, or expect you to do every little thing they tell you to do.

Listen….. trust and honestly are huge in a relationship!

With that being said, you need to be honest with your partner if there is a problem. There are several ways you can introduce your problem to them. First, sit them down and honestly tell them how you feel. Let them know that you don’t like what they are doing, how it makes you feel, and how you think they can change it. If they do not listen to you or get what you’re telling them, try some kind of couple’s therapy. This is offered for a small expense, sometimes even free, at local churches and clinics. If your partner isn’t open to therapy then bring in your friends. If your friends agree with how you feel, let them sit down with you and your partner to discuss their feelings and opinions on the situation as well.

Personally, I have been in a relationship where my partner wanted to be “my parent”. It lasted for two years and ten months, gradually getting worse. I told them how I felt but never went beyond that point. It got so bad that sadly I had to end the relationship. So, if you are interested in your partner and want to make your relationship work, let them know how you feel.

I wish you the best of luck in whatever decision you make, and I hope everything works out for the best!
