Overcomer or Underachiever
Generally there are two types of people in the world today: the OVERCOMERS and those who are OVERCOME. There is even a world of difference between the words “overcome” and “overcomer”. The Greek word for “overcome” is HETTAS and means “to be inferior, to be conquered, to be forced to yield, to set below”. Whereas, the Greek word for “overcomer” is NIKAO, which means “to be victorious, to win, to be victorious over your enemies.” When we examine those who have been overcome, we must determine what it is they are overcome by. Paul wrote in the book of Romans…..”Be not overcome with EVIL, but overcome EVIL with good”. So Paul warned not be overcome with evil because the greater force is good. The word evil in the Greek is KAKOS and means A BAD NATURE. Our thinking is not as it ought to be. When our thinking, feelings, and actions are wrong we become tormented, troubled and troublesome, injurious, stubborn, and destructive. These symptoms may not manifest themselves right away outwardly but oftentimes they cause mental and emotional confusion INWARDLY. They cause us to doubt God and who He says we are. And if these attitudes are not eventually dealt with we will “underachieve”IN life and soon be “overcome” BY life.
When Paul wrote to the church in Rome (The Book Of Romans), he was not dealing as much with their activities as he was with their MENTAL processing. Paul was literally trying to get them to CHANGE their way of THINKING. Paul was saying (and I’m paraphrasing), we must first be victorious in our THINKING BEFORE we can be victorious in controlling our ACTIONS. We cannot overcome evil with good until we change our way thinking. If you haven’t noticed it yet this concept runs throughout my writing. “As a man or woman THINKETH so are they. We have the ability to create our external environment just by the way you and I think. Paul also understood how important this concept was so he gave us a key, he said we should “cast down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bring into captivity EVERY THOUGHT to obey Christ.”
First, we MUST learn to control our imaginations. UNCONTROLLED imaginations potentially cause more problems than anything else in our minds. When our imaginations are not controlled, we will imagine ANYTHING, about ANYONE, in ANY situation, including God Himself. Another damaging thing that results from our uncontrolled imaginations is JEALOUSY. JEALOUSY has broken up more homes, marriages, relationships, and destroyed more lives than anything else. Again, Paul was instructed by God to capture every thought and make them obey Christ (Truth). Submitting our thoughts to Christ is an OVERCOMING activity.
WE MUST PRACTICE THIS ON A DAILY BASIS OR OUR THOUGHT LIFE WILL RUN RAMPANT AND BEGIN TO RULE US IN THE WRONG WAY.
Everything we demonstrate in our lives started in our minds. When do not willingly control our thoughts and make them obey Christ (Truth), evil thoughts will proceed out of our hearts and cause us and those around us to suffer needlessly. Our mind and its thinking pattern will, when left unchecked, defile us. Also, and please take note of this, “out of the mind proceed blasphemy, evil speaking, slander, pride and foolishness. So, in essence, a corrupt mind eventually speaks “corrupt”, “negative”, and “damaging” things.
Peter, in the book of Peter, gave us the key to negate this damage. He said, “For he/she who will love life and see GOOD days, let him/her refrain his tongue from evil, and their lips speak NO guile.” The word guile means deceit or deception, pretending to be something we’re not, speaking words that deceive. My constant and fervent prayer is that we practice thinking and speaking the very some things we want thought and spoke about us.
“BY OUR OWN WORDS WE WILL BE JUSTIFIED OR BY YOUR OWN WORDS WE WILL BE CONDEMNED”.
